Accessible Parking for Businesses
The Northwest A
DA Center created a program about accessible parking in collaboration with the Tacoma Area Commission on Disabilities and the Human Rights and Human Services Department of the City of Tacoma. It is intended to be used by businesses in Tacoma not only as an explanation of the need for accessible parking by people with disabilities, but also as an introduction to implementation of accessible parking.
The program takes the user through these topics: Benefits, Basics, Surface/Slope, Design, Access Aisles, Construction, Problems and Enforcement. The program was developed in the fall of 2010 and is in the process of being updated. For example, the fine for parking violations in Tacoma was $250 but has since been increased to $450. Also, the movie concerning Enforcement is going to be revised and has not yet been captioned.
The Northwest ADA Center will revise and expand Accessible Parking for Business to have applicability to each of the four states in Region 10 - Washington, Idaho, Alaska and Oregon. This will be the first in a series of online educational programs about implementation of the ADA and accessibility for people with disabilities. The next program to be developed will be about ADA and Service Animals.
